knit gauge is loose and snags/ tears easily

Received this as a gift and is incredibly soft. However, the cardboard hang tag snagged and put a hole in it near the neckline, then the seam split under one of the arms while wearing it the first time. I'm a knitter, but I don't know that I can repair this delicate of a fabric without making it...

Works beautifully under a cardigan or blazer. Close fitting but friendly to curves. I have very sensitive skin and am surprised I'm not getting a reaction given how close it fits. Came back to get another color.
